This area is addressed by the United States and European Pharmacopeia “Minimum Sample Weight”.
The smallest sample a balance can be used to weigh is dependent on a number of variables: external environment, precision of the balance and customer performance requirements. Ultimately it can also only be calculated in situ.
This however does not help when you are trying to decide what balance to purchase.

So, to give an indication we have generated this guide. However it is important to note this is based upon:

• The balance is being used in good laboratory conditions, where external environmental factors are kept to a minimum.
• A balance from a reputable balance manufacturer is being used

Readability
Readability is the smallest increment of mass that a laboratory balance can display. It represents the fi nest resolution of measurement and is typically expressed in grams (g), milligrams (mg), or micrograms (μg). This does not indicate the smallest sample weight you can weigh out on a balance ( see below)

Capacity
Determine the maximum weight you need to measure. Ensure you take into account any tare vessels / container that may be used.
A tare vessel (or tare container) is a container used to hold a substance while being weighed in a laboratory. The term tare refers to the weight of the container itself, which is subtracted from the total weight to obtain the net weight of the substance.
Most modern laboratory balances have a tare function, which allows the user to place the empty container on the balance and press the tare button. This resets the displayed weight to zero, so when the substance is added, only its weight is shown.

Common Examples:

• Weigh boats (small plastic or aluminium dishes for powders)
• Beakers or flasks (for liquids or bulk solids)
• Filter paper (for weighing precipitates)
• Centrifuge tubes (for biological samples)

You need to take into account the weight of the tare vessel / container when selecting a balance. For example if you are weighing a sample with a weight of 150g and you use a tare vessel / container weighing 50g – you will need a balance with a minimum capacity of 200g

Having a stable bench for laboratory weighing is super important because even tiny disturbances can mess up your results. Here’s why it matters:

1. Accuracy and Precision
Analytical balances are extremely sensitive. If the bench wobbles, vibrates, or shifts, it can introduce errors or fluctuations in the reading.

2. Eliminates Vibrations
Vibrations from nearby equipment, foot traffic, or even typing can travel through unstable surfaces.

A solid, vibration-dampening bench absorbs or resists movement, ensuring the balance stays still.

3. Safety
If you’re weighing reactive or hazardous substances, an unstable bench could lead to spills or dangerous accidents.

4. Mitigation
It is possible to purchase dedicated weighing benches.  If this is not possible:

• Locate the balance over the legs of a bench – the most stable part of a table
• Move to low-traffic areas where there are fewer people walking by and creating floor vibrations (eg away from doors)
• Do not place balance on a soft pad eg writing mat (creates an unstable surface)

Common Sources of Air Movement in Laboratories

• Drafts from Doors and Windows: Air currents from open doors or windows can affect the balance pan.
• Foot Traffic: The movement of people near the balance can create air disturbances.
• Heating and Ventilation Systems: Airflow from HVAC systems can interfere with weighing accuracy.
• Nearby Equipment: Laboratory equipment like centrifuges, shakers, or fume hoods can generate air currents.
• Fume Cupboards. Your balance always be subject to airflow in a fume Cupboard. But we know from our experience that the finer the readability on your balance the more of an effect the air flow will have.
• Strong Temperature Sources. Air flow / air movement can also be created by strong temperature sources like radiators. If you have your balance located near one this can have an effect.

Strategies to Minimize Air Movement in Laboratories

Strategic Placement:

• Isolate the Balance: Position your laboratory balance in a draft-free area, away from doors, windows, and air vents.
• Minimize Foot Traffic: Reduce activity around the balance to minimize disturbances.
• Consider a Weighing Booth: A dedicated weighing booth can provide a controlled environment, shielding the balance from air currents.

Utilize Windshields:

• Create a Still Zone: Windshields act as barriers, protecting the balance pan from air disturbances.
• Choose the Right Size: Select a windshield that adequately covers the balance and sample.

Calibrate Regularly:

• Maintain Accuracy: Frequent calibration ensures that your laboratory balance compensates for any minor fluctuations caused by air movement.
• Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Adhere to the specific calibration procedures recommended by your balance manufacturer.

Electronic filters:

6. Stand by mode
   • Leave the balance on and  in stand by mode when not in use. This is achieved by leaving the balance connected to the mains, and then turning the balance off on the keypad. In this mode it will not cool down completely, staying close to the recommended operating temperature.
